9H Ceramic Coating

7H Ceramic Coating

The "H" rating system explained — and which level your car actually needs.

The 'H' rating you see in ceramic coating marketing references the Mohs hardness scale — but the way it's used in detailing is largely marketing language. Here's the honest difference.

Our Take

The honest answer

9H ceramic is the right answer for any vehicle you plan to keep more than 2 years. The lifespan difference (5 years vs 1-2 years) means 9H costs less per year over time, even at a higher upfront price. 7H makes sense for short-term-ownership cars, lease vehicles you'll return in 2-3 years, or budget-constrained jobs. We use professional 9H exclusively because the math always favors it for owners.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is 9H ceramic actually 9H hardness?

+

On the Mohs scale, 9H means harder than glass — that's technically possible for cured ceramic films. In real-world terms, 9H coatings resist fine wash-induced micro-marring much better than 7H. They're not bulletproof — neither rating prevents rock chips or curb scratches.

Why is 9H more expensive?

+

Two reasons: the formulation costs more (higher SiO2 content), and application requires more careful surface prep (paint correction included) since 9H locks in whatever's underneath for 5 years. Cheap labor + cheap product on damaged paint = a 5-year mistake.

Can I apply 9H ceramic myself?

+

Most professional 9H formulations are restricted to certified detailers. The application requires a controlled environment, IPA-prepped paint, no humidity, and precise leveling within minutes of application. DIY 9H from auto parts stores is rarely the same product as professional 9H.
